Deep Winter Melancholia

Sharon Lasitter

Dusky morning chill,
I look beyond
The blinds

Again, a whisk of whiteness
A stretch of freeze
Ice crackling along the panes

Shuffling along floorboards,
Loneliness,
A blowpoke for the embers

Remembering the
Heat of April sun,
I stir the coals

I strain to hear
Melting ice -
Instead, the squeal of iron hinges

Perhaps today,
The sun will break -
Warmth enticing the swallows
